Saint Thomas Aquinas is one of the most fascinating figures in the history of Christian philosophy and theology. Born in 1225 in Italy, he grew up in a noble family, but from an early age he showed an unusual inclination towards religious life. Against his parents’ wishes, he decided to join the Dominican Order, which caused great controversy at the time, since they expected him to follow a career more “appropriate” to his social position. It is said that, to dissuade him, his brothers even locked him in a tower for more than a year, but nothing shook his determination.
Thomas had a brilliant mind and an insatiable curiosity. During his studies, he immersed himself in ancient texts by Greek philosophers such as Aristotle, and managed to combine this knowledge with Christian theology in a way that had never been done before. His ability to connect faith and reason was so impressive that he became known as the “Angelic Doctor.” Furthermore, his works profoundly influenced Western thought, and are still studied today by philosophers, theologians and scholars from all over the world.
Despite his remarkable intellect, Saint Thomas was a humble and dedicated person. Reports say that he had a pure heart and a deep spirituality, often entering a state of ecstasy during his prayers. Interestingly, near the end of his life, he is said to have stated that everything he wrote seemed like "straw" compared to the greatness of God, showing that, for him, the mystery of faith always surpassed any human understanding. It is an inspiring example of how the search for knowledge can go hand in hand with devotion and humility.
