Description

Saint Sebastian is one of the most recognized figures of the Catholic Church, remembered for his unwavering courage and devotion. He lived during the 3rd century, a time when Christianity was persecuted by the Roman Empire. Born in Narbonne, France, Sebastian served as an officer in the Praetorian Guard in Rome. What many didn’t know was that he was secretly a Christian, helping his fellow believers imprisoned by the empire, bringing them hope and comfort in dark times.

The most famous story about Saint Sebastian is his execution—or rather, his two executions. When it was discovered that he was a Christian, he was condemned to be tied up and shot with arrows, a scene that became one of the most iconic images in art history. However, Sebastian miraculously survived the attack and was cared for by a Christian woman named Irene. Once recovered, he bravely presented himself again to Emperor Diocletian to reaffirm his faith, which led to his final execution by beating.

Saint Sebastian is considered a protector against plagues and diseases, a role that gained prominence during the Middle Ages when the bubonic plague ravaged Europe. His image is frequently depicted in paintings and sculptures, with his body pierced by arrows, symbolizing not only martyrdom but also resilience and triumph. He became the patron saint of several cities, including Rio de Janeiro, and his devotion remains strong worldwide.
