Few figures hold the religious importance of Mary of Nazareth, the mother of Jesus Christ. Venerated since the early days of Christianity, she is considered by millions to be the greatest and most sacred saint, known for her extraordinary virtues, as revealed in the Annunciation by the Archangel Gabriel.
Known as the Virgin Mary, she conceived Jesus through the Holy Spirit, and upon her death, God Almighty ascended her body to the heavens. She is also known for her numerous apparitions to faithful followers around the world, with the most famous being Our Lady of Aparecida. Her role is so significant that her importance transcends Catholicism and Christianity itself. She is mentioned more often in the Quran than in the Old Testament, and two of the longest chapters in the Quran are about Mary and her family.
Such a sublime figure could not fail to be constantly represented in sacred art, through incredible paintings and sculptures. Her role was significant during the Renaissance, with some of the most famous representations of the period, such as the Pietà, being of Mary.
