Joan of Arc, known as the Maid of Orléans, is one of the most iconic figures in French history. Born in 1412 in Domrémy, she believed from a young age that she heard voices of saints guiding her. These voices instructed her to help the dauphin Charles reclaim the throne of France during a critical period of the Hundred Years' War against England.
At 17, Joan managed to gain an audience with Charles VII, and impressed by her determination and faith, he allowed her to lead an army to lift the siege of Orléans. Dressed as a soldier and holding a white flag, she inspired the French troops to a series of decisive victories. Her courage and charisma transformed her into a symbol of hope for the French people, and in 1429, Charles VII was crowned king at Reims Cathedral, with Joan by his side.
Unfortunately, Joan's journey was short and tragic. Captured by the Burgundians, allies of the English, she was handed over to an ecclesiastical court that judged her for heresy and witchcraft. In 1431, at just 19 years old, Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in Rouen. Centuries later, in 1920, she was canonized by the Catholic Church, becoming Saint Joan of Arc. Her story of bravery and sacrifice continues to inspire many, symbolizing the fight for justice and unwavering faith.
