Poseidon is one of the twelve Olympians. His domain comes from the division he made, along with his two brothers, of the world after defeating the Titan Cronus. Zeus took the skies, Hades the underworld, and Poseidon the waters. The earth and Olympus belong to all three. He is the god of seas and oceans, storms, and horses.
A protector of sailors, he was considered the patron of several Hellenic cities, none more famous than Atlantis, his domain among men. His image is forever associated with the trident and the seas. Future maritime nations tied their imagination to his personification, and he remains one of the most well-known gods of old.
