Poseidon is one of the twelve Olympians. His domain comes from the division he made, along with his two brothers, of the world after defeating the Titan Cronus. Zeus took the skies, Hades the underworld, and Poseidon the waters. The land and Olympus belong to all three. He is the god of seas and oceans, storms, and horses.
Protector of sailors, he was considered the patron of various Hellenic cities, none more famous than Atlantis, his dominion among men. His image has forever been associated with the trident and the seas. Future maritime nations linked his mythology to his personification, and he remains one of the most well-known gods of ancient times.
