Few figures hold the religious importance of Mary of Nazareth, the mother of Jesus Christ. Venerated since the early days of Christianity, she is regarded by millions as the greatest and most sacred saint, due to her extraordinary virtues, as revealed in the Annunciation by the Archangel Gabriel.
Known as the Virgin Mary, she conceived Jesus through the Holy Spirit, and upon her death, Almighty God ascended her body to the heavens. She is also known for her many apparitions to the faithful around the world, the most famous being Our Lady of Aparecida. Her role is so important that it transcends Catholicism and even Christianity. She is mentioned more often in the Qur'an than in the Old Testament, and two of the longest chapters in the holy book of Islam are about Mary and her family.
Such a sublime figure has been constantly represented in sacred art, through paintings and sculptures. Her role in the Renaissance was great, and some of the most famous representations of the period, such as the Pietà, are of Mary.
