The A-gyo represents the voice of the temple deity, while the Un-gyo represents the deity's attentive ear. Together, they symbolize the power of communication and the ability to hear and understand the prayers of worshippers.
The design of Komainu statues varies depending on the region and period, but they often feature fierce expressions and are depicted as powerful, noble beasts. They are frequently shown with a mane, a large curled tail, and may be adorned with accessories such as a ball, a sword, or a jewel, which also hold symbolic significance.
Komainu are also used in gardens, cemeteries, and private residences as decorative elements to bring luck, safety, protection, and prosperity to their owners. They are also considered symbols of the ability to balance the masculine and feminine forces of the universe and to protect the temple and its people from harm.
