Description

Hela, in Norse mythology, is the goddess of the underworld and the guardian of the dead. She is the daughter of Loki and the giantess Angrboda, appointed by Odin to rule over Helheim, the realm where souls who did not die in glorious combat, but rather from old age or illness, are sent. Unlike Valhalla, the hall of heroes, Helheim is a quieter, somber place where spirits rest eternally under the care of the goddess.

Hela is described as having half of her body beautiful and the other half in a state of decay, symbolizing the duality between life and death. Her role in the Norse pantheon is often underestimated but is essential for maintaining cosmic balance. While warriors strive for Valhalla, Hela provides a home for those who do not partake in epic battles. She is not viewed as evil but as an impartial and inevitable figure who justly governs the fate of all who arrive in her domain.

One of Hela's most significant moments occurs during Ragnarök, the Norse apocalypse. In this apocalyptic battle, she remains a powerful figure, closely tied to the final fate of the gods. Although often associated with fear and death, Hela also embodies the inevitable acceptance of mortality and the ongoing cycle of life and death that underpins the Norse universe.
