Vlad Tepes, also known as Vlad the Impaler or Vlad Dracula, was a 15th-century voivode, prince of Wallachia, which is now part of Romania. He is notorious for his brutal methods of punishment, including impaling his enemies on stakes, which earned him the nickname "the Impaler."
Despite his reputation for cruelty, Vlad Tepes is also remembered as a national hero in Romania for his resistance against the Ottoman Empire and his efforts to keep his kingdom independent from the Muslim hordes.
He became closely associated with the legend of Dracula, the Lord of Vampires, popularized in the 19th and 20th centuries by Bram Stoker's novel Dracula and countless film adaptations. Although there is no historical evidence suggesting he was a vampire, the Dracula legend has become deeply intertwined with his legacy. His stories have become closely linked in the popular imagination, and Tepes is often regarded as the human past of the terrifying vampire.
