Joan of Arc, a young peasant girl from medieval France, is a figure who transcends time. Born in 1412 in Domrémy, she became known for her mystical visions, in which she claimed to hear divine voices guiding her to free France from English domination during the Hundred Years’ War. At just 17 years old, Joan went to King Charles VII and, against all odds, convinced him to give her troops. Her courage and determination were so great that she inspired veteran soldiers to follow her into battles that many thought were lost.
With shining armor and flag in hand, Joan led the French to several victories, the most notable being the Siege of Orléans. She believed she was fulfilling a divine mission, and this unwavering faith earned her the respect and admiration of her countrymen. However, her meteoric rise also aroused envy and distrust. Captured by the Burgundians, allies of the English, she was tried for heresy. In 1431, at just 19 years old, she was burned at the stake, becoming a martyr and symbol of resistance.
Centuries later, Joan was canonized in 1920, being recognized as a saint by the Catholic Church. Today, her story is celebrated not only for her faith, but also for her strength and courage in defying the limits imposed by her time. Joan of Arc remains an icon of inspiration, reminding us of the transformative power of believing in a cause greater than ourselves.
