Euripides, one of the three great tragedians of Ancient Greece, was born in 480 BC in Salamis. Known for his works that deeply explored human psychology, Euripides brought to the stage complex and realistic characters, in contrast to the idealized heroes of his contemporaries. His tragedies tackled controversial themes and challenged the social and religious norms of his time.
Throughout his career, Euripides wrote about 90 plays, of which only 18 have survived in full to this day. Some of his most famous works include "Medea," "The Bacchae," and "Hippolytus." He had a unique ability to portray human emotions in all their intensity, especially passion and madness. His heroines, often more central than the heroes, were figures of great strength and complexity, reflecting his critical view of the role of women in society.
Although not widely acclaimed during his lifetime, Euripides' influence grew significantly after his death in 406 BC. Today, he is considered a master of Greek tragedy, admired for the psychological depth of his characters and the boldness of his social critiques. His plays continue to be performed and studied, demonstrating the lasting impact of his work on literature and theater.
