Description

Ovid, or Publius Ovidius Naso, was one of the greatest poets of Ancient Rome, renowned for his ability to transform myths and love stories into beautiful poetry. Born in 43 B.C., he lived during a time of great cultural and political fervor, but his focus was on human emotions, especially love. His most famous work, Metamorphoses, is a collection of myths that recount stories of fantastic transformations, where gods and mortals intertwine in narratives of desire, vengeance, and redemption.

Ovid had a unique talent for storytelling, combining lightness with depth. In The Art of Love, for instance, he offered love advice and taught Romans the art of seduction with humor and irony. However, this irreverent approach to love eventually contributed to his downfall. Ovid was exiled by Emperor Augustus in 8 A.D., allegedly for reasons related to his poetry and a personal “indiscretion,” something he referred to as carmen et error (poetry and error).

Despite his exile, Ovid’s work continued to influence generations of writers, artists, and poetry lovers. Few understood the mysteries and contradictions of the human heart as he did. He transformed the most complex emotions into accessible and beautiful verses, becoming an eternal voice for themes of love, loss, and transformation. Today, he remains one of the most read and admired poets of antiquity.
