The Monster from Frankenstein is an iconic figure in the horror genre, created by writer Mary Shelley in her 1818 book, Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus. The character has been portrayed in numerous cinematic adaptations and has become a symbol of the fear of the unknown and the dangers of unethical science.
Although the monster's name is often confused with that of his creator, the scientist Victor Frankenstein, the character himself is actually a creature created by Frankenstein using parts from different human corpses and brought to life through an electric storm. Initially benevolent and curious, the monster eventually turns against his creator and causes destruction and death.
The image of Frankenstein's Monster is recognized worldwide and is often seen as a symbol of our own capacity to create things that are larger than ourselves and can spiral out of our control.
