Description

Marcel Duchamp was a French artist who challenged the conventions of 20th-century art. With an innovative and provocative mind, he questioned what truly defines a work of art. In 1917, Duchamp shocked the world by submitting a common urinal, titled "Fountain," to an art exhibition. This revolutionary work, known as an example of "readymade," broke with tradition by suggesting that the concept and idea behind the art were just as important as its execution.

Born in 1887, Duchamp was one of the leading figures of the Dada movement, which promoted the deconstruction of the cultural and artistic values of the time. He was a master at using humor and irony to criticize the artistic establishment. One of his most iconic works is the parody of the "Mona Lisa," where he added a mustache and goatee to Leonardo da Vinci's famous painting, challenging the reverence for classical art.

Duchamp was also an avid chess player, a hobby that influenced his view of art as a game of strategy and thought. His ability to see beyond the obvious and question established norms left a lasting legacy, making him a central figure in modern and contemporary art. Duchamp not only challenged art but also expanded it into territories that once seemed unthinkable, redefining the role of the artist and art itself in the world.
