Buddha, which in Sanskrit means "Enlightened One," is the name given to Siddhartha Gautama, a religious leader who lived in India. His kindness and wisdom earned him this title. He is regarded by Buddhists as the "Supreme Buddha," the founder of Buddhism.
Siddhartha Gautama was born around 563 B.C. in Kapilavastu, the capital of the Sakya Kingdom, in the northern and mountainous region of India, now part of modern-day Nepal.
