Described as the most original creation in the Roman pantheon, Venus is the goddess of desire, fertility, love, and beauty. She embodies and satisfies passionate desires. Born from the sea, she is the counterpart to Vulcan and Mars, the gods of war and fire. She unites man and woman in the creation of life, and was the primary goddess to whom pregnant women made offerings in reverence.
Her influence on classical and Renaissance art is immense, with remains of statues and temples dedicated to her found throughout the former empire. During the European Renaissance, she became famous as an erotic yet pure icon.
One of the great masterpieces of the period is "The Birth of Venus" by Sandro Botticelli. So impactful is the artist’s work that our statue is a direct influence of his painting. Our Venus, as in Botticelli’s painting, is emerging from the sea, elevated on a shell.
