Description

Machado de Assis was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1839, and his story is almost as intriguing as his works. The son of humble parents, with no access to the best schools, he found his true home in reading. While still young, he began working in printing houses and newspapers, where he came into contact with great writers of the time. Little by little, he developed a sharp and critical eye on society, something that would later become a hallmark of his novels.

With subtle humor and refined irony, Machado knew how to explore human contradictions like few others. Characters such as Brás Cubas and Bentinho reveal the selfish, vain, and often pathetic side of Rio de Janeiro's 19th-century elite. But he did this without exaggeration, leaving the reader uncomfortable, as if looking into a mirror and noticing details they would rather ignore. His writing, often direct and provocative, was an invitation to see beyond appearances.

Despite being recognized during his lifetime, Machado was never a man of ostentation. He preferred silence over crowds, observation over haste. A founder of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, he became an undisputed reference in national literature. But his greatest legacy is not only in his books—it is in the way he unraveled the human soul, proving that, despite time and change, our weaknesses and ambitions remain the same.
